1633: Battle of Leolulu Bay: The Ming Dynasty defeated the Dutch East India Company.

1764: The Battle of Buxar was fought between armies of Mir Qasim, the Nawab of Bengal; the Nawab of Awadh; and the Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II and British East India Company led by Hector Munro.

1796: Sawai Madhav Rao Peshwa II committed suicide by jumping from the terrace.

1797: Andre Jacques Garnerin became the first man to land on a parachute at an altitude of 1,000 meters above a balloon.

1912: Gandhiji accompanied Gokhale on tour of South Africa, Laurenco Marques, Mozambique and Zanzibar. He gave up European dress and milk and restricted himself to diet of fresh and dried fruits.

1927: Nikola Tesla invented six new inventions, including the single-phase electric.

1929: Air Mail Series Stamps were issued. These stamps were of denominations of 2, 3, 4, 6, 8 and 12 annas.

1937: Gandhiji presided over the educational conference at Wardha and outlined his scheme of education through basic crafts.

1947: There were bound to be difficulties in consolidating the loosely federated Indian provinces, princely states, etc. into one homogeneous whole state. Kashmir, after initial dithering, acceded to India voluntarily and by popular consent, then, was invaded by Pakistani tribesmen with the support of the Pakistani government.

1938: Chester Carlson created the world’s first Xerox machine.

1962: India’s largest multipurpose river valley project ‘Bhakra Nangal’ dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

1964: French writer, poet, and philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre won the Nobel Prize but rejected it.

1977: International Sun-Earth Explorers 1 & 2 launched into Earth orbit.

1983: The Union government reduces the upper age limit for the Civil Services Examination from 28 years to 26 years.

1997: Yahoo completes purchase of Four11.

1997: Faced with unprecedented Presidential rebuff, a divided U.F. Government reversed decision on invoking Article 356 in Uttar Pradesh. Kalyan Singh government survived.

1994: Indian industrialist Navinbhai C. Dave was awarded the Queen of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth’s Coat of Arms Award for her work in industry and education.

2000: The Supreme Court, in a significant order, erases Karnataka High Court judgement discharging former Chief Minister S. Bangarappa and his then private secretary R. Suribabu in a corruption case.

2001: Grand Theft Auto 3 video game was released.

2008: India launches its first unmanned lunar mission Chandrayaan-1..

2008: Google Play is launched, the official app store for the Android operating system.

1689: King John V of Portugal.

1873: Swami Rama Tirtha, great social reformer and poet, was born at Murariwala village of Gujranwala district. He lectured throughout Japan and America spreading “practical Vedanta”.

1900: Ashfaqulla Khan was a freedom fighter in the Indian independence movement.

1908: John Sutton, actor (Tower of London, Return of Fly), was born in Rawalpindi, India.

1913: Harumal Sadarangani, famous Sindhi writer, was born at Sind, Pakistan.

1923: Tatapuram Sukumaran was a Malayalam writer.

1928: Jayanta Mahapatra, a major Indian English poet. He is the first Indian poet to win the Sahitya Akademi award for English poetry.

1934: Sharad Panday was an Indian heart surgeon.

1935: D. Y. Patil, Indian educator, politician, and governor of former governor of Bihar.

1935: Abu Nasar Khan Choudhury, Indian politician who was the Minister of State for Science and Technology in the Government of West Bengal.

1937: Kader Khan was an Indian film actor, screenwriter, comedian, and director.

1942: Raghuveer Singh, an internationally renowned photographer.

1946: Deepak Chopra, Indian-American physician and author

1933: Vithalbhai Patel, an Indian legislator and political leader, co-founder of the Swaraj Party and elder brother of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

1954: Jibanananda Das was an Indian poet, writer, novelist and essayist in the Bengali language.

1964: Sir Khwaja Nazimuddin, a Bengali conservative politician and one of the leading founding fathers of Pakistan. Former Prime Minister of Pakistan.
