1796: James Philip, an eight-year-old boy from Berkeley, Gloucester, England, vaccinated against the world’s first goddess.

1940: WWII – Holland surrendered to Germany.

1953: Y. N. Sukthankar was appointed as the Cabinet Secretary of India. He held this office till 31-07-1957

1954: President issues an order extending the application of the Indian Constitution to Kashmir with the concurrence of the State government.

1955: A 20-year Warsaw Pact was signed in Warsaw, Poland by the communist nations of Soviet Russia, Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and East Germany.

1960: The first plane of India flew up to New York.

1963: Kuwait joined the United Nations.

1972: Fighting between Indian and Pakistani forces along the Kashmir border was reported.

1976: Pakistan and India agree to resume diplomatic ties.

1982: All India Radio was renamed ‘Akashwani’ but its Urdu service yet announces that it was All India Radio.

1992: LTTE banned in India.

1993: Bombay High Court upholds Goa C.M. Ravi Naik’s disqualification by speaker under the anti-defection bill.

1993: Justice V. Ramaswamy decides to resign.

1994: RBI announces tight monetary policy.

1996: H.D. Deve Gowda was elected leader of the third front as its prime ministerial candidate.

1998: India will not sign CTBT unconditionally, says the Prime Minister.

2000: L. K. Advani, Union Home Minister, announces the extension of the ban on the LTTE by two more years.

1914: Ekanath Dattatreya Kulkarni, educationist and writer, was born at Bhaloni, Tal Pandharpur.

1923: Mrinal Sen, an Indian film director.

1965: Sachin Khedekar, an Indian actor and director.

1981: Pranav Mistry, an Indian computer scientist, and inventor. 

1984: Mark Zuckerberg, an American internet entrepreneur. He is a co-founder and CEO of Facebook. 

1997: Manushi Chhillar, an Indian actress, model, and the winner of Miss World 2017.

1923: Narayan Ganesh Chandavarkar, one of the founder members of the Indian Congress and a social reformer, passed away.

1963: Dr Raghuvir, a famous linguist and President of Jansangh passed away.

1978: Jagdish Chandra Mathur, a modern Hindi playwright, passed away.

1998: Frank Sinatra, an American singer, actor, and producer.

2013: Asghar Ali Engineer, an Indian reformist-writer and social activist.
