About Padma Awards

The Padma Awards are one of the highest civilian honours of India. They are conferred by the President of India on the eve of Republic Day (26 January) annually. The awards are given in three categories: Padma Vibhushan (for exceptional and distinguished service), Padma Bhushan (distinguished service of a high order), and Padma Shri (distinguished service).

  • Padma Vibhushan: The highest of the three awards, conferred for exceptional and distinguished service.
  • Padma Bhushan: Awarded for distinguished service of a high order.
  • Padma Shri: Awarded for distinguished service.

The Padma Awards were instituted in 1954. They are one of the most prestigious awards in India, and are considered to be equivalent to the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award of India.

The Padma Awards are given in recognition of distinguished service in all fields of activity or disciplines where an element of public service is involved. This includes fields such as art, literature, science, engineering, medicine, public affairs, sports, education, social service, and trade and industry.
