1667: A devastating earthquake in Shemakha in the Northern Caucasus region of Russia killed 80 thousand people.

1758: Britain captured the Duquesne Fort of France.

1758: French and Indian War: British forces capture Fort Duquesne from French control. Later, Fort Pitt will be built nearby and grow into modern Pittsburgh.

1866: Allahabad High Court inaugurated.

1867: Alfred Noble patented dynamite.

1876: American Indian Wars: In retaliation for the American defeat at the Battle of the Little Bighorn, United States Army troops sack the sleeping village of Cheyenne Chief Dull Knife at the headwaters of the Powder River.

1879: Sri Thanwardas Lilaram Vaswani, professor, saint poet, great orator and prolific writer, was born in Hyderabad, Sindh (now in Pakistan). He was the founder of Mira Movement.

1922: Frederick Banting announced the discovery of insulin in diabetes.

1930: 690 earthquake tremors were recorded in a single day in Japan.

1936: The anti-Comintern (Communist International) agreement was signed between Germany and Japan.

1948: Establishment of National Cadet Course (NCC).

1975: Suriname gained independence from the Netherlands.

1981: The first international cricket match played at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad.

1991: Kamal Narayan Singh became the 22nd Chief Justice of India.

1999: Indira Gandhi Peace Prize announced to senior social activist Baba Amte.
