1861: Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya was an Indian civil engineer and statesman and the 19th Diwan of Mysore. He was also an Indian engineer, scholar, and Bharat Ratna Laureate.

1876: Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay was a Bengali novelist and short story writer of the early 20th century.
