660: Emperor Jimmu formed the nation of Japan.

1613: Mughal Emperor Jahangir allowed the East India Company to set up a factory at Surat.

1660: Aurangzeb send Mukhtar Khan to Aurangabad, giving him charge of the Deccan.

1856: The Kingdom of Awadh is annexed by the British East India Company and Wajid Ali Shah, the king of Awadh, is deposed.

1911: Henry Pique became the first Indian to fly a Hunter Lee Air Mail flew from Allahabad to Naini, a village 10 km away.

1929: Vatican City was separated from Italy by a special treaty signed between Pope Pius XI and Benito Mussolini in the Lateran Treaty.

1959: The great Indian cricketer Veenu Mankad played his last Test against the West Indies in Delhi.

1979: Prime Minister Morarji Desai declared the Cellular Jail on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands a national monument.

1990: Nelson Mandela was released from prison after 27 years in prison.

2014: A military transport plane crashes in a mountainous area of Oum El Bouaghi Province in eastern Algeria, killing 77 people.


2015: A university student was murdered as she resisted an attempted rape in Turkey, sparking nationwide protests and public outcry against harassment and violence against women.

2016: A man shoots six people dead at an education center in Jizan Province, Saudi Arabia.

2017: North Korea test fires a ballistic missile across the Sea of Japan.

2018: Saratov Airlines Flight 703 crashes near Moscow, Russia with 71 deaths and no survivors.
