Indian Revenue Service (IRS) is ones of the service that comes under Central Civil Services (Group A), and is for Revenue services to the nation. IRS functions under the the Department of Revenue in the Union Ministry of Finance and is concerned with the collection and administration of the various direct and indirect taxes accruing to the Union Government.

IRS has two branches: IRS (Customs and Central Excise) and IRS (Income Tax).

Recruitment

There are two streams of recruitment: Direct Recruits and Promoted Officers. Direct Recruits are selected from the Civil Services Examination conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), whereas Promoted Officers are promoted gradually over several years of service. A high rank in the Civil Services Examination ensures a post in the Indian Revenue Service(is).

Functions / Work Profile

IRS officers are known as the guardians of economic frontiers. IRS officers are primarily attached to Income Tax and Customs Departments. They are also posted at several state and central government agencies.
