The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the Engineering Services Examination (ESE) for recruitment of engineers to the four categories of Engineering Services: Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering. These engineers are appointed then to various posts in governmental organizations like the Indian Railways, Central Engineering Service, Survey of India, Indian Ordnance Factories Service ( Engineering Branch ), Military Engineer Services, Indian Telecommunication Service, Central Power Engineering Service, Central Water Engineering Service etc.

This examination is held once a year, generally in the month of June/July. Blank application forms and other particulars are published in Employment News, generally in the month of January/February.

The primary position offered to candidates who qualify this exam is Assistant Engineer which upgrades to various positions and then ultimately ends on the Chairman/Assistant Managing Director.

Eligibility Criteria

Age limits

21-30 years on 1st August of the year of Examination.

Educational Qualifications:

A degree in Engineering from a recognized university or equivalent. M.Sc degree or its equivalent with Wireless Communications, Electronics, Radio Physics or Radio Engineering as special subjects also acceptable for certain Services/posts only.

Candidates appearing at their engineering degree or equivalent examination are also eligible to compete. Candidates qualifying on the result of the written part of the Examination will be required to submit the proof of passing the requisite examination along with their detailed application form to be filled up at that stage.

Examination Pattern

The written exam consists of 2 papers.

  • The paper I (Objective type): – General Ability Test, (Part A: General English), (Part B: General Studies) – 200 marks
  • Papers II & III (Objective type): Civil Engineering / Mechanical Engineering / Electrical Engineering / Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering – 200 marks each paper
  • Papers IV & V(Conventional Type): Civil Engineering / Mechanical Engineering / Electrical Engineering / Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering – 200 Marks for each paper

Upon successful clearing the written examination, candidates are called for personality test (interview) that carries 200 marks.
