The Civil Services (Preliminary) was named as the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) . The CSAT is the qualifying exam conducted by the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) every year to select candidates for Civil Services Main Exam. Those who pass the Mains Exam and Interview can join prestigious Indian government services such as IAS, IPS, etc. CSAT is traditionally conducted every year in May. CSAT paper 1 will be conducted in the morning session and CSAT paper 2 will be conducted in the afternoon.
UPSC CSAT Syllabus
From Civil Service Examination, the Preliminary Examination would consist of two papers- Paper I and Paper II. The syllabus and pattern of the Preliminary Examination would be as under
CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test) has two papers:
– General Studies (Paper I)
– General Ability Test (Paper II)
Paper I – ( 200 marks )
Duration : Two hours.
The first will be general studies, which includes current events, Indian history, geography, polity, economic and social development, general issues on environmental ecology, bio-diversity and climate change – not requiring subject specialization – and general science.
- Current events of national and international importance.
- History of India and Indian National Movement.
- Indian and World Geography : Physical, Social, Economic geography of India and the World.
- Indian Polity and Governance: Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
- Economic and Social Development: Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc.
- General issues on Environmental ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change: that do not require subject specialization.
- General Science.
Paper II – ( 200 marks )
Duration : Two hours.
The second paper, which will be the aptitude test, will include aptitude skills including comprehension, interpersonal skills, logical reasoning, decision making and problem solving, general mental ability, basic numeracy and English language comprehension skills of class 10th level.

- Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude etc.), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc.)
