1978: Charlie Chaplin’s coffin was stolen from a cemetery in Switzerland.

1984: Mother Teresa University inaugurated by Mother herself at Kodaikanal in Tamil Nadu.

1995: Incorporation of Yahoo.

1996: Malabar University of Kerala comes into being.

2001: The radical Taliban decapitated about 6,000 ancient and invaluable Buddha statues near the central Afghan city of Bamiyan and began destroying them with cannons and tanks.

1902: Surya Narayan Vyas, an Indian astrologer, and diviner from Ujjain.

1931: Mikhail Gorbachev, a Russian and former Soviet politician. The eighth and last leader of the Soviet Union.

1933: Anandji Virji Shah, an Indian music director. Together with his brother, he formed the Kalyanji-Anandji duo.

1968: Daniel Craig, an English actor.

1977: Andrew Strauss, an English cricket administrator, and former player.

1990: Tiger Shroff, an Indian actor.

1546: Mirabai, a 16th-century Hindu mystic poet, and devotee of Lord Krishna.

1700: Rajaram Bhosle I, the younger son of Maratha ruler Shivaji.

1930: D. H. Lawrence, an English writer, and poet.

1949: Sarojini Naidu, an Indian political activist, and poet.

1986: Kashinath Ghanekar, an Indian stage, and film actor.
