The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) holds a competitive examination named National Defence Academy & Naval Academy (NDA / NA) Examination for admission to the Army, Navy and Air Force wings of the NDA and for Indian Naval Academy Course (INAC).

The candidates who wish to join the Indian Naval Academy will have to undergo 4 years B. Tech Course and would be given an opportunity to join Executive and Technical Branches of the Navy subject to availability of vacancies. This examination is held twice a year, generally in the month of April – May & September – October. Blank application forms and other particulars are published in Employment News, generally in the month of October – November & April – May.

National Defence Academy: 355 (208 for Army, 55 for Navy and 92 for Air Force)

Eligibility Criteria

A candidate must be an unmarried male

Age Limit, Sex and Marital Status: Only unmarried male candidates born not earlier than 02nd January 1998 and not later than 01st January 2001 are eligible

Age limits

The applying candidates should have their age between 16-1/2 – 19 Years.

Educational Qualifications:

For Army Wing of NDA

12th Class pass of the 10+2 pattern of School Education, or equivalent examination conducted by a State Education Board or a University.

For Air Force and Naval Wings of NDA and for 10+2 (Executive Branch) Course at Naval Academy

– 12 th Class pass of the 10+2 pattern of School Education with Physics and Mathematics, or equivalent conducted by a State Education Board or a University.

– Candidates appearing at the 12th Class Examination are also eligible to compete. Such candidates will be required to submit the proof of passing the 12th Class Examination by a date to be specified in the Commission’s Notice for the Examination.
– Candidates appearing in the 11th class exam are not eligible for this examination
– Those candidates who have failed INSB/PABT earlier are not eligible for Air Force
– Candidates who are debarred by the Ministry of Defence from holding any type of Commission in the Defence Services shall not be eligible for admission to the examination and if admitted, their candidature will be cancelled.

Physical Standards

– Candidates must be physically fit according to physical standards for admission to National Defence
– A candidate who has resigned or withdrawn on disciplinary grounds from any of the training academies of the Armed Forces is not eligible to apply

Nationality:

A candidate must either be (i) a citizen of India, or (ii) a subject of Bhutan, or (iii) a subject of Nepal, or (iv) a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before the 1st January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or (v) a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka and East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India. Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (ii), (iii), (iv) and (v) above shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Govt of India. A certificate of eligibility will not, however, be necessary in the case of candidates who are Gorkha subjects of Nepal.

Exam Centers

The National Defence Academy and Naval Academy Examination (II) 2016 will be conducted at different venues located at 41 Centres throughout the country on September 18, 2016 (Sunday)

The UPSC NDA / NA exams are held in the following cities: Exam Centres: Agartala, Ahmedabad, Aizawl, Allahabad, Bangalore, Bareilly, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Cuttack, Dehradun, Delhi, Dharwad, Dispur, Gangtok, Hyderabad, Imphal, Itanagar, Jaipur, Jammu, Jorhat, Kochi, Kohima, Kolkata, Lucknow, Madurai, Mumbai, Nagpur, Panaji (Goa), Patna, Port Blair, Raipur, Ranchi, Sambalpur, Shillong, Shimla, Srinagar, Thiruvananthapuram, Tirupati, Udaipur, Vishakhapatnam.

Application Fee

Candidates (excepting female SC/ST/PH candidates/ Sons of JCOs/NCOs/ORs specified in Note 2 in the notification who are exempted from payment of fee) are required to pay a fee of Rs.100/- (Rupees one hundred only) either by depositing the money in any Branch of SBI by cash or by using net banking facility of State Bank of India/ State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur/ State Bank of Hyderabad/State Bank of Mysore/State Bank of Patiala /State Bank of Travancore or by using Visa/Master Credit/Debit Card.

On receipt of documentary proof, genuine fee payment cases will be considered and their applications will be revived, if they are otherwise eligible

Penalty for wrong answers: Candidates should note that there will be a penalty (negative marking) for wrong answers marked by a candidate in the objective type question papers.

PABT applicable to candidates with Air Force as the first choice would also be conducted for all SSB qualified candidates with one of the choices as Air Force subject to their eligibility and if they are so willing.

Admit Card

UPSC does not issue paper-based admit cards. The admit card can be downloaded from the official website of UPSC – http://www.upsc.gov.in(link is external). The candidates whose applications has been rejected by the commission will get a letter of rejection stating the reason for rejection through the e-mail they provided.

The candidates should verify the details on the admit card. If the photograph is not printed or is not visible on the e-Admit Card, the candidates are advised to carry two (2) identical photographs (one photograph for each session) along with proof of identity such as Identity Card (Students I Card used by School/College), Voter I Card, Aadhaar Card, Driving License, Passport etc. and printout of e-Admit Card to the venue of the Examination to secure admission in the Examination.

Upon successful clearing the written examination, candidates are called for a personality test (interview) that carries 900 marks.

Selection Procedure

A two-stage selection procedure based on Psychological Aptitude Test and Intelligence Test has been introduced at Selection Centres/Air Force Selection Boards. All the candidates will be put to stage one test on the first day of reporting at Selection Centres/Air Force Selection Boards. Only those candidates who qualify at stage one will be admitted to the second stage/remaining tests. Those candidates who qualify stage II will be required to submit the original Certificates along with one photocopy each of (i) original Matriculation pass certificate or equivalent in support of date of birth; (ii) Original 10+2 pass certificate or equivalent in support of educational qualification.

Training

The course of training is for three years.
