68 AD: Roman Emperor Nero commits suicide.
1659: Dara Shikoh was handed over to Aurangzeb’s army by Jiwan Khan, a Baluchi whose life was saved by Dara.
1665: Treaty of Purandar was signed between Mirza Raje Jaisingh and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
1752: French army surrenders to the English in Trichinopoly, India.
1866: Establishment of Allahabad High Court.
1900: Birsa Mudra, the freedom fighter, died in Ranchi Jail under mysterious circumstances.
1934: World famous cartoon Donald Duck made his theatrical debut with The Wise Little Hen.
1957: General Election ( 2nd) of India ends.
1959: USS George Washington, the first-ever submarine to have a nuclear ballistic missile, was launched in US Navy.
1964: Lal Bahadur Shastri became the second Prime Minister of India when the country was shocked of Jawaharlal Nehru’s death and Indo-China war. Shastri gave the quotation “”Jai Jawan Jai Kisan”” which motivated the war-affected Indians to boost their morale. He remained in this office till he died on January 11, 1966 at Taskent. In his cabinet, Indira Gandhi served as Minister of Information and Broadcast
1967: Narayan Shripad Rajhans, alias Bal Gandharva, went into a coma in Bombay and never regained his consciousness.
1980: M. G. Ramachandran’s second AIADMK ministry takes office.
1986: ICMR set up a network of Reference/Surveillance Centres for AIDS in almost all states of India.
1986: First death due to AIDS was reported in a Mumbai based private hospital.
1992: LDF wrests Narakal while the UDF retains the Tanur assembly seat in Kerala.
1992: Rajesh Khanna (Congress-I) defeats Shatrughan Sinha to wrest the New Delhi Lok Sabha seat from the BJP.
1997: Portfolio changes were effected by I K Gujral in Union Cabinet.
1997: At least 50 persons were killed and 5,000 families affected in a landslide triggered by heavy rains in Gangktok.
1998: Gujarat was hit by a cyclone killing 1,000 people in six days.
1998: 81 persons are killed as cyclone hits the Saurashtra and Kutch regions of Gujarat and Jalore district of Rajasthan. Subsequently, the toll is put at 934 in the Kutch-Saurashtra region alone.
2001: India’s Leander Pes and Mahesh Bhupathi won the men’s doubles title at the French Tennis Championships.

1994: Yogi Dhirendra Bhramachari, [controversial Flying Swami], Hindu saint, died in an air crash near Jammu. He was 70.
