1529: Babur Shah, Mughal Emperor, defeated Afghan Nawab Nasrat Shah, king of Bengal, on the banks of the Gand and the Ghaghra river.

1542: St. Francis Xavier arrived at Old Goa, then the capital of Portuguese Goa.

1589: Mian Tansen, a prominent figure of North Indian (Hindustani) classical music and famous singer of Akbar’s court, died at Gwalior. Tansen has remembered for his epic Dhrupad compositions, creating several new ragas, as well as for writing two classic books on music Sri Ganesh Stotra and Sangita Sara.

1680: Chatrapati Rajaram Maharaj was crowned.

1775: Nanda Kumar, king of Calcutta, was arrested.

1889: The Eiffel Tower was officially opened to the public at the Universal Exposition in Paris.

1910: Edward VII, King of Great Britain and Emperor of India, died suddenly of pneumonia at Buckingham Palace tonight. He ruled Britain for nine years. Power passed immediately to his son George, the Prince of Wales, who will rule as King George V. The 68-year-old monarch’s sudden death threw his country into a state of shock. Edward had apparently caught a cold during a visit the past weekend to the wet grounds of his estate at Sandringham.

1941: Joseph Stalin becomes Prime Minister of Russia.

1948: India rejected the Security Council’s plan for UN supervision over the plebiscite in Kashmir.

1949: EDSAC launched the first electronic digital storage computer software.

1952: Dr Rajendra Prasad re-elected the President of India “”Rashtrapati”” after the first Presidential election held under the Indian constitute.|

1952: Maria Montessori, pioneer in mordern education, who spent almost 10 years in India, died in Noordwijk aan Zee. The principles and techiques advocated by her are also applied to the education of handicapped children and adult education.

1967: Dr. Zakir Hussain elected President.

1971: D. Sen became the director of the Central Bureau of Investigation

1983: Adolf Hitler’s diary was exposed as a hoax.

1993: Violence in Orissa state secretariat, CM manhandled.

1994: The Euro Tunnel, which runs through the English Gulf and connects England to France, was inaugurated by Queen Elizabeth II of England and Francois Mitra, President of France.

1944: Mahatma Gandhi was released unconditionally from his last imprisonment from Aga Khan Palace in Pune.

1997: 12 persons were killed and eight seriously injured in two blasts in east Delhi.

2000: Saurav Ganguly wins the Ceat International Cricketer of the Year award 1999-2000.

2001: Pope John Paul II visited a mosque in Syria. He was the first pope to visit a mosque.

2002: Bhupinder Nath Kirpal became the 31st Chief Justice of India.

2010: Ajmal Amir Kasab, convicted for the 26/11 attack in Mumbai, was sentenced to death.

1940: Aban Mistry, an Indian female Tabla player, singer, and musician.

Death / Death Anniversary:

1589: Tansen, a prominent figure of Hindustani classical music.

1862: Henry Thoreau, was an American naturalist, essayist, poet, and philosopher.

1916: Edward VII passed away in London.

1922: Chhatrapati Rajarshi Shahu, great revolutionary, freedom fighter and social reformer of Kolhapur passed away in Bombay. He was 48.

1946: Bhulabhai Desai, an Indian independence activist and acclaimed lawyer.

1952: Maria Montessori, an Italian physician, and educator.

1966: Raghunath Purushottam Paranjpye, the first Indian to achieve the coveted title of Senior Wrangler at the University of Cambridge.

1973: Shiv Kumar Batalvi, an Indian poet, writer and playwright.

2000: Benoy Krishna Chowdhury (89), veteran freedom fighter and prominent CPI(M) leader, died at a Government Hospital in Calcutta.
