1674: Coronation of the Shivaji Maharaj, Founder of the great Maratha Empire.

1833: Andrew Jackson became the first president of the United States.

1850: Levi Strauss made the very first pair of blue denim.

1882: Electronic iron patented by Henry W. Seely of New York City. Back then, it named an electronic flatiron.

1903: Hiralal Sen shot the first Indian Advertisement sequences for Jabakusum (hair tonic) and Edward’s Tonic.

1907: John Morley, U.K. Government State Secretary, declares “it will not withdraw from India under any circumstance

1944: D-Day, World War II – Allies attacked a German camp in Normandy, France, in a single night, killing thousands and capturing thousands.

1947: Gandhiji writes to Mountbatten, with Pakistan conceded, to persuade Jinnah to amicably settle all outstanding points with Congress.

1961: Central Institute of Fisheries Education, a deemed university, was established in Mumbai to impart post-graduate education and training, mainly to the in-service fisheries personnel of the country to provide trained manpower for the fisheries developmental activities.

1981: The worst-ever railway accident took place in Bihar when a train plunged in Samastipur river

1984: Operation Blue Star ended. 576 killed, 335 injured.

1984: One of the most popular video games, Tetris was released for the first time in USSR.

1986: Militant Sikhs in Amritsar call for the murder of Surjit Singh Barnala, Chief Minister of Punjab and J.F. Ribeiro, the Chief of Police.

1997: U.S. Congress honors Mother Teresa with a gold medal.

2000: Abhijit Kunte wins the National `A’ chess championship at Mumbai.

2004: Tamil is established as a “classical language” by the President of India, Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, in a joint sitting of the two houses of the Indian Parliament.

1596: Sikh Guru Har Govindji, the sixth Sikh guru, was born. He fashioned a military role for the Sikhs.

1867: Baba Kharak Singh, freedom fighter, was born at Sialkot.

1890: Gopinath Bardoloi, architect of modern Assam, freedom fighter and leader, was born.

1891:  Venkatesh Iyengar Masti, famous Kannad poet, story writer, novelist, playwrigh, and critic, was born.

1903: Bakht Singh, Indian evangelist, well-known Bible teacher and preacher (d. 2000)

1909: Morappakam Joysam Gopalan, cricketer (1 Test India v England 1933-34), was born in Maduranthakam, Madras.

1919: Rajinder Krishan, an Indian poet, lyricist, and screenwriter.

1922: Gopalan Morappakam Joysam, the cricketer, was born at Maduranthakan, in Tamil Nadu. He received the Padmashree in 1964.

1924: S. R. Bommai, former President of Janata Dal, was born.

1929: Sunil Dutt, Indian actor, director, producer, and politician (d. 2005)

1935: Harry Crews, great US writer, and actor (Indian Runner), was born.

1936:  D. Ramanaidu, Indian actor, director, and producer, founded Suresh Productions (d. 2015)

1940: Kumar Bhattacharyya, Baron Bhattacharyya, Indian-English engineer and academic

1943: Asif Iqbal, Indian-Pakistani cricketer

1955: Suresh Bhardwaj, Indian stage designer, director and theatre teacher (d. 2016)

1970: Sunil Joshi, Indian cricketer

1988: Neha Kakkar, an Indian singer.

Death / Death Anniversary

1861: Camilo Benso, Italy’s first prime minister.

1916: Lord Kitchener, the premier soldier of the British Empire, passed away

1941: Louis Chevrolet, a Swiss-American race car driver, co-founder of the Chevrolet Motor Car Company.

1982: Devraj Ars, former Chief Minister of Karnataka, passed away.

2002: Shanta Shelke, a Marathi poet and writer.
