1498, 30th May: Columbus set out on a trip to America for the third time with 6 ships.

1574: Henry III became King of France.

1631: The first French newspaper, the Gazette de France, published.

1826: ‘Udanta Martand’ first Hindi newspaper started, so Hindi (Patrakar Din) Journalism Day also celebrated on 30th May.

1867: Maulana Mohammad Kasim Nanantavi established the famous Islamic educational centre ‘Dar- Ul -Ulum’ in Devkampa, Uttar Pradesh.

1887: The 7th Battalion of the Mechanised Infantry Regiment was raised as 37 DOGRAS by Lt. Col V. Rivas at Sialkot.

1919: Rabindranath Tagore returned back the honour as a protest against the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.

1942: WWII – 1,000 British planes bombed Cologne, Germany.

1952: S.C.Mathur was appointed as the Narcotics Commissioner of India. He headed this office till 01-07-1955.

1975: Establishment of the European Space Agency.

1962: 69 killed in a bus crash near Ahmedabad.

1977: Express Train fell into Beki river in Assam killing 44 persons.

1981: Bangladesh leader Zia-ur-Rehman was killed in a guest house in Chittagong. A total of eight people, including Rahman, were killed in the incident.

1998: A 6.5 MW earthquake in Afghanistan killed 4,000 to 4,500 people.

1985: Earthquake in Srinagar.

1987: Goa becomes the 25th state of India.

1895: Pandurang Sakharam Pisurlekar, the great historian in Goa, was born.

1915: Krishen Behari Lall, Indian Civil Service, and Diplomat, was born at Delhi.

1916: Dinanath Dalal, an Indian painter, and illustrator.

1955: Paresh Rawal, an Indian film actor, comedian, and politician.

1971: Ness Wadia, a British-Indian businessman.

1983: Krushna Abhishek, an Indian film actor and extreme comedian.

Death / Death Anniversary

1431: Joan of Arc, a Catholic saint.

1574: Charles IX, King of France.

1606: Guru Arjan, the fifth of the ten total Sikh Gurus.

1778: Voltaire, a French Enlightenment writer, historian, and philosopher.

1912: WilburWright, the elder brother of Orville Wright, with whom he developed the world’s first successful airplane.

1950: Devdutta Ramkrishna Bhandarkar, great historian and archaeologist, passed away.

1955: Narayan Malhar Joshi, the father of Indian Worker’s Movement, passed away

1981: Ziaur Rahman, former President of Bangladesh.

1991: Uma Shankar Dixit (90) passed away.

2000: am Vilas Sharma, an Indian literary critic, linguist, poet, and thinker.

2007: Gunturu Seshendra Sarma, a Telugu poet, critic, and litterateur.

2013: Dr. Vina Mazumdar, an Indian academic, left-wing activist and feminist.
