1998: Pakistan conducted five successful nuclear tests in the Chagai area of Balochistan.

2008: The end of the 240-year-old monarchy in Nepal ended today.

2010: In West Benga, India, the Jnaneshwari Express train derailment and subsequent collision kills 148 passengers.

Birthday / Anniversary

1660: George I, King of Great Britain and Ireland.

1883: Vinayak Damodar Savarkar “Veer”, great freedom fighter, social reformer, politician, and writer, was born at Bhagur village near Nasi

1895: Bagal Bhai Madhavrao Khanderao, freedom fighter, author, and painter, was born.

1903: Shantanu L. Kirloskar, the great industrialist, was born at Sholapur (Maharashtra).

1907: Purohit Dingambar Vinayak (Nanasaheb), the leader in Maharashtra, was born.

1908: Ian Fleming, a British author, journalist, and naval intelligence officer.

1921: Mahant Avaidyanath, a Hindu preacher and politician.

1923: Nandamuri Tarak Ramarao, film star, former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and founder of Telgu Desam Party, was born. He  has acted in many films including ‘Patal Bhairavi’.

1925: Awadh Kishore Narain, the educationist, was born.

1946: K. Satchidanandan, Indian poet and critic 

Death / Death Anniversary

1787: Leopold Mozart, a German composer, conductor, music teacher, and violinist. 

1849: Anne Bronte, an English novelist, and poet.

1930: Bhagwaticharan Vohra, a great revolutionary freedom fighter, died near the banks of Ravi River during a bomb testing.

1964: Mehboob Khan, a producer-director of Indian cinema.

1968: Bhagwan Gopinathji Bhan, was a mystic saint of early 20th century Kashmir in India. He has been called a “jivanmukta” (liberated soul) or “Aghoreshwar” and his spiritual state has been described as “Shambhavi Avastha” (state of Shiva), died. He was a great devotee of Shiva and Shakti and took intense “”Sadhana””. His disciples and devotees set up an ashram at Kharyar in Srinagar in his name.

1972: Edward VIII, King of Great Britain/N Ireland/emperor (India 1936), passed away at the age of 77.

1999: B. Vittal Acharya, an Indian film director, and producer.

2014: Maya Angelou, an American poet, memoirist, and civil rights activist.
