1898: Syed Ahmad Khan, great social reformer, educationist, journalist, leader and one of the most eminent builders of Modern India, passed away at Aligarh.

1902: The first electric tramcar in Asia ran in 1902 from Esplanade to Kidderpore, Kolkata

1942: Gandhiji meets Sir Stafford Cripps in New Delhi; later declares Cripps proposals to be a “post-dated cheque”

1958: Nikita Khrushchev became President of Soviet Russia.

1977: The government revoked the national Emergency promulgated on Dec 3. 1971.

1977: N. Sanjeeva Reddy elected Speaker of the Lok Sabha.

1989: Delhi beat Bengal by an innings and 210 to win the Ranji Trophy.

1989: T.N.Seshan was appointed as the Cabinet Secretary of India. He held this office till 23-12-1989

1990: A 10-member Progressive Democratic Front Ministry led by Churchill Alemao sworn in Goa.

1990: 21 people die as a bus accidentally touched a high voltage wire in Karagpur India.

1991: Chautala recommends Assembly dissolution.

1992: India signs Friendship Treaty with Ukraine.

1993: Hari Singh from Haryana hijacks an IA plane, but surrender after 8 hours.

1996: President and Governors of respective states issue notifications for elections to the 11th Lok Sabha and 6 State Assemblies.

1997: 40 more inducted in UP cabinet, raising strength to 45.

1997: Punjab men and Railway women win National volleyball league in Tiruppur.

1997: South African President Nelson Mandela arrives in New Delhi on an official visit.

1899: Lakshmi N. Menon, an Indian freedom fighter and politician.

1901: Carl Barks, an American cartoonist, author, and painter.

1981: Akhil Kumar, Indian boxer

1985: Ram Charan Teja, an Indian film actor, producer, and entrepreneur.

Death / Death Anniversary

1552: Guru Angad Dev, Sikh Guru, passed away.

1767: Khanderao Holkar, one of the Generals in Peshwa kingdom, passed away.

1898: Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, an Islamic pragmatist, Islamic reformer, and philosopher.

1952: Kiichiro Toyoda, a Japanese businessman. He is the founder of Toyota Motor Corporation.

1967: Jaroslav Heyrovsky, a Czech chemist, and inventor.

1968: Yuri Gagarin, a Soviet Air Forces pilot who became the first human to journey into outer space.

2000: Priya Rajvansh, an Indian film actress.
