1606: Guru Arjun Dev, the spiritual leader of Sikhs and Hindus, was massacred at the instruction of Emperor Jahangir.

1611: Emperor Jahangir married Meherunnisa, widow of Sher Afghan. She received the title Noor Jahan.

1877: Sir John Lawrence–passenger steamer of McLean & Co. of Calcutta–sank near the coastline of Orrisa in a storm. This ship carried 732 passengers.

1915: Mahatma Gandhi established Sabarmati Ashram near Ahmedabad.

1933: All young Hindus aged between 12 and 25 years were forced to carry identity cards to prevent the spread of terrorism.

1941: Sagarmal Gopa, a devoted patriot and freedom fighter, was arrested in Jaisalmer. He wrote two books “Jaisalmer Rajya ka Gunda Shasan” and “Raghunath Singh Ka Mukadma” for which he was prohibited to enter in Jaisalmer.

1955: Kanchanganga, the third highest peak in the world, was first climbed by British mountaineers Joe Brown and George Band.

1961: US President John F. Kennedy announced at the joint session of the US Congress that the Apollo Program will be launched before the end of this decade.

1963: Organization of African Unity (OAU) established in Adisababa, Ethiopia.

1977: The Chinese government lifted the ban on William Shakespeare’s literature. The ban lasted for about 10 years.

1979: Commercial Unity Day started.

1981: Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) was established in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The member states are Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.

1985: A cyclone killed at least 10,000 people in Bangladesh.

1992: Famous Bengali writer Subhash Mukhopadhyay awarded the Jnanpith Award.

1995: American scientists succeeded in decoding the DNA of a living organism for the first time.

1996: Maharashtra govt. announces the decision to revive Sri Krishna Commission set up to probe the 1993 Mumbai riots.

2011: the famous American show Oprah Winfrey said goodbye to this day after completing 25 years. The hit show was named after the program’s anchor, Oprah Winfrey.

2012: SpaceX Dragon became the first commercial spacecraft to successfully integrate with the International Space Station.

1886: Rash Behari Basu, great revolutionary, freedom fighter, social reformer, and leader, was born at Palara Bighati village, West Bengal.

1899: Nazrul Islam, revolutionary and Bengali poet, was born in Churulia village of Burdwan district.

1917: Abdul Vavakunju Ummasalumma Khader, freedom fighter, was born in Kerala. He was hanged on September 10, 1943.

1936: Rusi Framroz Surti, cricketer (Indian slow lefty, hat-trick for Qld 1969), was born in Surat, Gujarat.

1957: M. G. Sreekumar, an Indian singer, and music director.

1954: Murali, Indian actor, producer, and politician (d. 2009)

1961: Woorkeri Venkar Raman, left-hand batsman and slow-spin bowler, was born in Madras.

1972: Karan Johar, Indian actor, director, producer, and screenwriter

1924: Ashutosh Mukerjee, famous educationalist, passed away in Dumraon at Bihar .

1937: Munshi Ajmeri passed away.

1954: Maharshee Rajratna ‘Manikrao’ (Gajanan Yashwant Manik), physical expert, passed away.

1998: Laxmikant Shantaram Kudalkar, an Indian music composer from Laxmikant-Pyarelal duo.

2005: Sunil Dutt, Indian actor, director, producer, and politician (b. 1929)

2005: Ismail Merchant, Indian-born film producer, and director (b. 1936)

2013: Mahendra Karma, Indian politician (b. 1950)

2013: Nand Kumar Patel, Indian politician (b. 1953)

2013: T. Soundararajan, an Indian Carnatic musician and a playback singer.
