1707:  A coalition of England, the Netherlands and Portugal is defeated by a Franco-Spanish army at Almansa (Spain) in the War of the Spanish Succession.

1792: “La Marseillaise” (the French national anthem) is composed by Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle.

1829:  Charles Fremantle arrives in HMS Challenger off the coast of modern-day Western Australia prior to declaring the Swan River Colony for the United Kingdom.

1859: British and French engineers break ground for the Suez Canal.

1953: Watson and Creek’s dissertation on the intricacies of the DNA molecule published in the journal Nature.

1954: The first practical solar cell publicly demonstrated by Bell Telephone Laboratories.

1961: Robert Noyce granted a patent for an integrated circuit.

1982: The first color broadcast on television in Delhi.

1989: Sri Lankan Parliament decided to grant voting rights to 330,000 Tamils of Indian descent.

2000: Supreme Court allowed the controversial Almatti dam to be raised to 519.6 meters.

2015: A magnitude 7.8 earthquake shook Nepal, killed at least 9,100 people.

2005: Ranganathananda, the 13th president of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission.
