1907: Riots break out in Rawalpindi and East Bengal, spreading to Punjab.

1908: Police in Calcutta discover a cache of explosives for use in an alleged anarchist plot.

1918: General Motors acquired Chevrolet Motor Company.

1921: Vinayak Savarkar’s brothers Babarao and Tatyarao were sent to India from the Andaman.

1921: Satyajeet Ray, a world-famous film director and a very short story writer, was born in a family of artists.

1926: Hindu women gain the right to seek elected office.

1930: Riots break out in Amritsar.

1950: France handed over its colony Chandranagar near Kolkata to the Government of India.

1953: Declaration by the PM that India was opposed to joining any power block in the event of another war.

1954: Ceylon Asian conference ends with a plea for peace in Indo-China, end of atomic tests and condemnation of colonialism.

1968: Lok Sabha passed the Public Provident Fund Act.

1974: 700 union leaders were arrested in a move to avert a rail strike in New Delhi.

1977: C.V. Narasimhan became the director of the Central Bureau of Investigation

1986: 30-year-old Ann Bancroft of America became the first woman to reach the North Pole.

1992: President J.B.Patnaik, former Orissa CM and PCC (I), arrested on corruption charges.

1998: The Indian Army at Bandipura market captured 10.5 Kg Charas.

2004: S Rajendrababu became the 34th Chief Justice of India.

2011: US Special Forces Navy Seals-6 assassinated Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad, Pakistan.

2012: Norwegian painter Edvard Munch’s ‘The Scream sold’ for 120 million at auction. This became a new world record.

1920: Vasantrao Deshpande, a Hindustani classical vocalist.

1921: Satyajit Ray, an Indian film director, writer, illustrator, and music composer.

1922: Kedarnath Modi, great Industrialist in Maharashtra, was born.

1969: Brian Lara, a Trinidadian former international cricketer.

1972: Ahti Heinla, an Estonian computer programmer and businessman. He is one of the developers of Skype.

1972: Dwayne Johnson, The Rock, an American-Canadian actor, producer, businessman, and retired professional wrestler.

1975: David Beckham, an English former professional footballer, the current president & co-owner of Inter Miami CF and co-owner of Salford City.

1519: Leonardo da Vinci, an Italian polymath and the greatest painter of all time.

1981: Dr Yashwant Singh Parmar, the architect of modern Himachal Pradesh and an energetic Chief Minister, passed away.

1985: Banarsidas Chaturvedi, an Indian Hindi-language writer, and journalist.

1999: Pt. Sudhakarbuva Digrajkar, a classical singer of the Jaipur-Atrauli family.

2011: Osama bin Laden, a founder of the pan-Islamic militant organization al-Qaeda.
