1290: Mu’izzu’d-din Kaiqubad was killed in his bed. He was proved to be an inefficient ruler

1913: Iron ropes bridge known as ‘Laxman Jhula’ was constructed over Ganga at Hrishikesh .

1919: Establishment of the International Labor Organization.

1930: Laxman cradle made of steel wires opened to the public in Hrishikesh.

1930: Pandit Motilal Nehru renamed ‘Anand Bhuvan’ as ‘Swaraj Bhawan’ and handed it over to the people.

1942: All-India Congress party rejects British offer of dominion status at New Delhi.

1952: Treaty between France and India, transferring the former French settlement of Chandranagar to India, is ratified by the National Assembly, Paris. It was the last formal step in completing the process of sovereignty.

1955: The Air India Kashmir Princess (a chartered Lockheed L-749A Constellation aircraft owned by Air India) was bombed and crashed in a failed assassination attempt on Zhou Enlai by the Kuomintang.

1964: Communist Party of India was divided in two parts. Firstly known as Communist Party of India [CPI], its second fragmentation was named as Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)]. This division was on ideological differences at the international level.

1970: The US launched Apollo 13 program for the moon campaign.

1979: Ugandan dictator Idi Amin left power.

1976: Apple’s Apple 1 computer was created.

1986: Halley’s Comet approached Earth at a distance of 6.5 billion kilometers.

1992: Marathi cinema’s Bhaichandra Govind Pendharkar gets Phalke Award.

1992: Dr. M.M.Thomas, Nagaland Governor, removed from office.

1999: Successfully tested Agni-2 missile

1993: Tamil Nadu and Karnataka decide to form a joint task force to nab Veerappan and announces a reward of Rs. 40 lakh for his capture.

1999: The DRDO has successfully flight tested AGNI-11 with a range of 2000 km, using solid propellant rocket motors in both stages and rail mobile launcher system from its new launch complex in the Orissa Coast. With this launch the country has reached the point of operationalisation of AGNI-11 as a weapon system. (1-1-2000).

1999: India successfully test-fires the extended range ”Agni-II” missile, bridging a key gap in its minimum nuclear deterrent profile.

1999: Tamil Nadu men, Railways women emerged National Volleyball League champions in Triprayar.

2000: Ms. Jhumpa Lahiri, an author of Indian origin, wins the Pulitzer Prize for fiction for her debut collection of short stories ‘Interpreter of Maladies’.

2011: Indian-American writer Jhumpa Lahiri was given the Pulitzer Prize for her debut work ‘Interpreter of Maladies’.

1755: James Parkinson, an English surgeon, apothecary, geologist, paleontologist, and political activist.

1827: Jyotirao Govindrao Phule, an Indian social activist, thinker, anti-caste social reformer, and writer.

1869: Kasturba Gandhi, an Indian political activist. She is the wife of Mohandas Gandhi.

1856: Lievens Constantly, Flemish missionary in India, was born.

1887: Jamini Roy, an Indian painter.

1892: Mithuben Petit, one of the women pioneer Indian independence activists.

1904: K. L. Saigal, an Indian singer, and actor.

1906: K.V. Jagannathan, great Hindi writer and journalist, was born at Krishnarayapuram,Tamil Nadu.

1908: Masaru Ibuka, a Japanese electronics industrialist and co-founder of Sony.

1931: Mahendranath Yeshwant Gupte, cricket test umpire for 1 test in 1984-85, was born at Mumbai.

1937: Ramnath Krishnan, well known Indian Tennis player, was born.

1951: Rohini Hattangadi, an Indian actress.

1977: Nidhi Razdan, an Indian journalist.

Death / Death Anniversary

1977: Phanishwar Nath Renu, an Indian writer of Hindi literature.

1993: Laxmanrao Madhav Bhide, senior freedom fighter and history expert, passed away.

1999: A.K.A. Abdul Samad (72), general secretary of IUML and State unit president, died in Chennai.

2001: Kamal Ranadive, an Indian biomedical researcher.

2007: Kurt Vonnegut Jr, an American writer.

2009: Vishnu Prabhakar, an Indian-Hindi writer.

2015: Hanut Singh, a General Officer in the Indian Army.
