1907: Swatantryaveer Savarkar celebrates the golden jubilee of the 1857 freedom struggle in London.

1940: World War II – Winston Churchill became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom following the resignation of Neville Chamberlain.

1940: World War II – Hitler invades Holland, Belgium, and France.

1981: The first day and night cricket match of India was played at the flood-lit ground of the Wilson College Gymkhana (Bombay)

1901: Sir Jagdish Chandra Bose, Indian scientist, in the hall of the Royal Society, London, which was packed with eminent scientists on May 10, 1901, proved that “plants and animals have similar touch sense”

1937: Unconditional release of Swatantryaveer Savarkar from Ratnagiri.

1957: Dr Rajendra Prasad was elected President of India for a second term.

1962: Marvel Comics published the first issue of The Incredible Hulk magazine.

1979: Micronesia became a republic.

1982: Karnataka Kranti Ranga led by Devaraj Urs comes into being.

1985: 59 were killed and 150 wounded in Sikh attacks.

1985: P. N. Bhagawati appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

1993: Santosh Yadav becomes the first Indian woman to reach Everest for the second time.

1994: Nelson Mandela was sworn in as the first black president of South Africa.

2005: India and Pakistan agreed to start the Lahore-Amritsar bus service.

2006: ISRO Chairman G Madhavan Nair and NASA Administrator Michael Griffin signed an agreement to put two US scientific instruments on India’s Chandrayaan 1 to be sent to the moon.

1917: Ramanand Maru Amin, the great novelist, was born in Baloor, Mangalore.

1918: Rameshwarnath Kao, Founder President of the Indian Research and Analysis Wing (RAW).

1927: Kunjunni Mash, an Indian poet of Malayalam literature.

1927: Nayantara Sahgal, an Indian writer.

1932: Jagdish Khebudkar, an Indian Marathi litterateur and lyricist of Marathi cinema.

1937: Manik Godghate, popularly known by his pen name Grace, a Marathi prose writer and poet.

1951: V. K. Singh, an Indian politician and a former four-star General in the Indian Army.

1954: Prakash Ambedkar, an Indian politician, social activist, writer, and lawyer.

1979: Indy Khabra, Soccer(Football) player, was born.

1971: Monisha Kaltenborn, Indian-Swiss lawyer and businesswoman

1774: Louis XV, King of France.

1899: Execution of Mahadev Vinayak Ranade for murdering Dravidian brothers in Rand murder case.

1910: Robert Koch, Nobel laureate, died of a heart attack.

1936: Dr Mukhtar Ahmad Ansari, a great freedom fighter, politician, journalist and Muslim leader, passed away.

1977: Jahangir Khan, a famous musician, passed away.

1992: Dr D.S.Tyagi, Chairman of the Agricultural Costs and Prices Commission, was shot dead by suspected Sikh terrorists in Delhi.

1992: K. G. Ramanathan, Indian mathematician (b. 1920)

1998: Yadunath Thatte, a Marathi journalist, editor, biographer, social worker, and socialist leader from Maharashtra, India.

2001: Sudhakarrao Naik, Indian politician, 16th Governor of Himachal Pradesh (b. 1934)

2002: Kaifi Azmi, an Indian Urdu poet.
